Um dos destaques do festival Sundance 2008 foi o documentário Man On Wire, ainda inédito no Brasil. O filme, dirigido pelo britânico James Marsh, fala sobre o “art crime” (crime artístico) do francês Philippe Pettit que cruzou as torres gêmeas do World Trade Center, em 1974, andando sobre uma corda. É realmente uma recordação bela dos prédios que tiveram o final trágico e histórico do 11 de setembro de 2001. A performance arriscada e arrojada de Philippe Petit consistiu em oito caminhadas na corda no topo das torres gêmeas, que tinham 110 andares. Os atentados terroristas que dizimaram os prédios nunca são citados no filme, mesmo assim o subtexto é forte mostrando que um homem estrangeiro foi fascinado pelas torres muito tempo antes delas se tornarem alvo de terroristas. No filme Philippe Petit se auto descreve como um menino que sempre teve compulsão por escaladas. As torres se tornaram para ele um objeto de obsessão desde que as viu pela primeira vez numa revista na sala de espera do dentista. Após fazer caminhadas sobre corda na catedral de Notre Dame, em Paris e sobre uma ponte em Sidney, na Austrália, Petit resolveu se arriscar no World Trade Center. E ele conseguiu o que parecia impossível: ele foi várias vezes até o terraço, no último andar, para estudar o terreno, achar pontos específicos e tirar fotos.Ele entrava de noite no prédio, furtivamente, para estudar e depois instalar a corda e, finalmente, após uma noite sem dormir, aconteceu finalmente a performance e ele caminhou sobre a corda entre os prédios oito vezes e ainda por cima se ajoelhou e deitou, para deleite da massa de pessoas que assistia petrificada.

Though I am still unsure if the beefed-up crew from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense will best their 2004 debut, there's no doubt that GdT's creative vision will make for the best-looking comic-book adaptation to date. I just wish Universal didn't feel the need to reveal so much of the movie in its series of trailers, previews, and TV spots; I feel like I watched the entire movie while sitting at the bar last week. I'd rather spend time nerding out at the movie's official production site, a home to all the minute details involved in bringing Mike Mignola's comic-book world (and underworld) to life.

THE BUZZ: While I think Ellen Page's appeal is the main reason this movie earned a limited theatrical release (Juno portrays a girl in love with Hagar's youngest son, played by Transamerica's Kevin Zegers), The Stone Angel, as you might expect, belongs to Ms. Burstyn and her character's unwillingness to succumb to the ravages of aging. A targeted release in this female-positive time for movies should boost Angel's fortunes, and I imagine this one will rake it in on DVD.

Like so many other promising features at Sundance earlier this year, DC wound up at IFC Films with little fanfare soon after the festival ended. Reviews all seem to state that the story's forced quirkiness sinks the otherwise intriguing pairing of Broderick and Alda (who don't get the highest marks for their respective performances, by the way), although the script saves its worst nuances and tics for its supporting characters -- so you might not be treated to the best work by Bobby Cannavale and Dylan Baker, either.
